On April 24, 1974 CPOs Louis D. Dixon (Bud) and Charles J. Bokinskie (Bo), intercepted a drug smuggler on the Campini Mesa, in the San Rafael Valley, Arizona. In the shootout that followed both Bud and Bo lost their lives. The smuggler also died.
After more than 45 years of rejections by the Forest Service, with the help of CBP Border Patrol, a memorial was paid for and erected on a CBP observation tower site just a few hundred yard from where they fell.
